What kid doesn’t love a fun party crown? I know my two girls are head over heals for crowns. Even with my oldest getting ready to turn 10, she still loves them. So with both my girls having summer birthdays, I thought it would be great to make them both a crown plus share with you a free template.
Here’s What You Need:
- Fuchsia 72″ Felt (sold by the yard, 1/3 of a yard will make 8 crowns)
- Pellon Sew-In Heavyweight Interfacing (sold by the yard & used to stiffen and support the felt)
- Fine Glitter 2 Ounces-Onyx
- Mod Podge Fabric-8 oz.
- Foam Brush
- Scissors (My personal favorites are these Fiskars Multi-Purpose Scissors)
- Fiskars Hand Punches-1PK/1/8” Circle (Micro Hole Punch)
- Crown Template (Template is only to be used for personal use. If you are interested in making & selling these crowns, please contact me.)
Step 1: Download & print out the template. Next, pin 2 pieces of felt together and cut your crown out using the template as your guide. Mark the location of your holes to be punched.
Step 2: Cut the Pellon using the template. You will only cut it to the dashed marks indicated on the template. The Pellon will be smaller because you don’t want to see it when you sew everything together. Sandwich the Pellon in between the two pieces of felt. Pin together.
Step 3: Sew the crown together by stitching along the edges. You can stop at each of the hole locations when sewing or you can sew right through them. The grommets will eventually go through the hole and you can trim the thread later. Do not sew the tab part on the back. This you will sew together at the very end.
Step 4: Go back to the locations where you marked on the felt for the grommets. Punch a hole using a mini hole punch. Determine which side will be the front of your crown and follow the directions for inserting the grommets.
Step 5: Next, take the Mod Podge and apply it to the front of the crown with a foam brush. Before it dries, apply the fine glitter and make sure the entire surface area has been covered. (I used my fingers to lightly press the glitter in place.) Let this dry thoroughly.
Step 6: Use spray fixative/ matte clear spray paint to set the glitter.
Step 7: Hand sew the small tab at the back of the crown so that the tab is on the inside. Use ribbon/elastic to tie on both sides of the crown.
