Back to school is one of my favorite times of the year.  I love getting all new school supplies for the kids… and for myself.  I know it’s because I’m a teacher.  But, I think a lot has to do with the excitement of going back to school and getting new students, wondering what my classes are going to be like, etc.  With all of the latest back to school supplies I have seen, they have some really great accessories out there.  Man, sometimes I wish I was back in school myself. O.k. maybe only for just a second.  I was recently fortunate enough that JoAnn.com sent me a mystery box of items that I was challenged to use.  I received the fabric pocket, glitter fabric spay paint by Tulip, and the rhinestones.  I thought all of the items would be perfect for making some of your own locker accessories. So, here is an easy tutorial for a DIY pencil holder for lockers.

Here’s What You Need:

This is for the Fabric DIY Pencil Holder.

  • Fabric
  • Mod Podge
  • Crystal Light Container
  • Foam Brush
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Trim
  • Fabric Pocket
  • Rhinestones
  • Heavy Duty Magnets (3 Per Container)

This is for the Paper Pencil Holder.

  • Scrapbook Paper
  • Crystal Light Container
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Scissors
  • Trim
  • Magnets

Step 1:

Begin by peeling off the label of the Crystal Light container.  These peel off really easy which makes it really nice.  Cut a couple of inches off the top.  I cut between 3 to 4 inches.  Just cut a little bit at a time though or the plastic may snap off.

Step 2:

If using fabric, cut enough so the fabric overlaps in the back.  This is just like wrapping a present.  You will want to have excess off the ends too.  Apply Mod Podge directly to the plastic container.  Smooth the fabric down so that it is adhered to the plastic container.  If it’s not sticking and giving you trouble, apply more Mod Podge.  It’s o.k. if it comes through the fabric because you will be Mod Podging the outside of the container as well.  Place Mod Podge on the inside lip of the container and fold the fabric over onto the inside.  Smooth the fabric out.

If making the paper version of the pencil holders, use a hot glue gun to adhere the paper to the plastic container.  Once again, just wrap the container like a present.  For the bottom of the container, cut the paper every so often in strips to fold over and glue to the inside of the container.

Step 3:

I added some glitter to the fabric with this Tulip Glitter Fabric Spray Paint.  Because you can never have enough glitter and bling on things. 🙂  Adhere the pocket to the outside of the pencil holder with hot glue.  This is a iron pocket, but hot glue worked just perfect for this decorative effect on the pencil holder.

Step 4:

Hot glue the the magnets to the back.  Last but not least, add cute trim or what ever you would like.  You could also add stickers. Just have fun with it!

Here are the pencil holders on my white board at school.  I ‘m definitely going to use these since I don’t have a container for my white board markers.  Usually my white board markers end up being all over the place, so this will be absolutely perfect.
