4th of July Star Headband

The 4th of July is always a big holiday celebration for us.  We usually go to my friend Patty’s house where they hold a neighborhood parade and raise money for CHOC Hospital.  It’s so much fun.  There are raffles, and prizes for the best decorated bike and helmets for the kids, root beer floats, BBQ, and loads of fireworks.  It is truly a grand 4th of July celebration.

So, I usually end up making something for the girls for the 4th.  This year I thought I would make Lily a big star headband to go with her BIG personality.

Here’s what you need:

  • Old T-Shirts in Red, White, and Blue  (Or you can purchase knit fabric if you don’t have any!)
  • Thread in Red, White, and Blue
  • Needle
  • Plastic Headband Form (I found mine at Michael’s on clearance.)
  • Piece of Felt
  • Hot Glue Gun

Step 1:

Cut T-Shirt

Cut the bottom section of the t-shirt off where it has been hemmed.  Cut roughly a 1 1/2″ strip.  Cut the strip in half.

Step 2:

beginning the head band

To begin wrapping the headband, hot glue the end of the t-shirt on the outside of the headband.  Hot glue a good section down.  I made sure I glued about an 1″ down.

Step 3:

inside of the headband

Turn the headband to the inside, and fold sides of the headband underneath and hot glue.

Step 4:

wrapping the headband

Wrap the headband evenly all the way to the other end.  I hot glued the t-shirt down every time I wrapped it.  Make sure to hot glue on the underside of the headband.  You probably don’t have to hot glue as much as I did.  I just wanted to ensure the headband wouldn’t unravel.  Especially, since Lily is a little tough on things.

Step 5:

Take a piece felt and fold it in half.  Next draw a star onto the felt with a permanent marker or fabric marker.  Cut out two stars at once.

Step 6:

cut out circles

Cut out several 1 1/2″ circles of all 3 colors.  Pinch the circle and run your needle and thread through the bottom.  Sew the blue circles all the way around the outside of the felt star.  Next, sew the white circles in the same manner.  Lastly, fill the center in with the red circles.  Go back and add circles where necessary to ensure your headband ends up looking like a star.

Attach the star to the headband with hot glue.  Take the second piece of felt and sandwich the headband in the middle.  Hot glue all of this together.
